Guru Mann - Health, Nutrition, Gym, Fitness

About:

Today's post is about a motivational event of Guru Mann sir which was held at Punjab University, Chandigarh. In this blog post, I am going to cover a few topics as explained by Guru Mann himself such as Health, Fitness, Nutrition, Gym, Career, Drugs, etc.

First of all, I would like to thank my dear friend Puneet Kapoor for inviting me to go with him to be a part of this event, It was a productive and enjoyable time.

Introduction:

I am not a consistent gym boy but, to begin with, Nutrition, Fitness, and Health are the fields that I take very seriously. We all can see that the number of people with health problems and diseases is rising constantly. Use of medicines is growing day by day which in turn affect the further health if taken for the long term due to their side effects. In most of the families, one can easily find a member having any kind of health problem and taking medications. India is greatly falling down in terms of health, nutrition, and fitness. Diabetes, Bad Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Mental Problems, Heart Problems, Bone Problems, etc. are all growing rapidly. Guru Mann has taken a great initiative to spread awareness of health, nutrition, and fitness in India.

I am very well aware that there are various foundations and NGOs that are working with the same goal. I am also a member in one of the similar NGO at Jaipur known as IMBUE by Dr. Poonam Chaudhary and when I started some work under her, I myself realized that the lifestyle I and many people have been living is a serious threat to a happy, productive and a healthy life we all wish to have. I am not preaching about anyone or Individual but, I am definitely going to preach the importance, benefit, and changes that I have seen personally in myself with a healthy lifestyle, maintaining nutrition and fitness. For now, let us begin with our topic.

Fitness and Gym?

Guru Mann explained that people often misunderstand fitness with gym and bodybuilding. Clearly, He said that the Gym is a fancy modern style of getting yourself in a good physique. It keeps you fit, healthy and of course works on every muscle individually which is not that possible in our day to day life. Gym is not our basic need but fitness and health is. If you cannot go to the gym it is alright. Since the goal of the gym is to make you fit, bodybuilding and abs come as a bonus with it. Being fit means you are active and not lethargic. You have the necessary stamina and have a healthy disease free lifestyle. You can be fit by nearly 30 minutes of minimum daily exercise even at your home or nearby park or garden. Yoga is one of the best ways to stay fit.
Gym or Nutrition?

Guru Mann explained that Gym is only 10-20% important when it comes to fitness and health. 80-90% of the main role in our fitness and health is played by our diet and nutrition. Good food brings the good out of you. It is what keeps your body free from diseases and health problems. Having too much oil and fat based dairy products daily such as, Ghee or milk is not healthy especially if you already have any health problem. It also shouldn't mean that you should strictly abandon these things. Sometimes, it may be good idea to have these things too depending on the region, condition, situation, and environment as these factors also play an important role in the diet and the nutrition of the people living there.

Health and Nutrition:

Nutrition is one of the most important factor for our health. Nutrition plays the role of fuel in our body. From energy to minerals and vitamins all would fall under the category of nutrition. Good nutrition will definitely keep the diseases and problems away while a lack of proper nutrition will lead you to various health problems and diseases. You don't necessarily need to buy multivitamins and supplements to stay healthy. Most of the essential nutrients are found in the food that we eat. Eating a salad, the timing of food intake, combination, semi-cooked food are all very important key points to keep in mind when it comes to your health.

I want to present a quick fact to you guys. Our body tries day and night to keep us free from the carbon in our body. Carbon being created in our body if stays in our body for a long term can have a negative impact on our health. To reduce this risk, Our body gets out most of the excessive carbon through the respiration process when oxygen binds with carbon in the blood creating a product of carbon dioxide thus, maintain a balance of carbon and other elements as carbon is very less toxic when it is present in a balanced amount. When you eat too much cooked/ roasted/ burned food for a long period of time, you are simply not only reducing the potential of that food but also ingesting a food substance that will produce carbon and will be harmful to you in a long run. Thus including raw food is essential to keep and maintain the balance in our diet.

Gym and Supplements/Steroids:

There have been a lot of cases where the self-proclaimed medical expert-gym trainers recommend there students to take certain medications to build their body. As per Guru Mann, No Gym Trainer is allowed or eligible to recommend any supplement like testosterone boosters, etc. to anyone. This is a crime and may prove fatal in some cases for the students under trainers.

Delhi High Court of Justice have already banned the possession/distribution of the steroids and supplement without eligibility and have mentioned that most of the supplements/steroids are in fact drugs that are illegal in India. Cases on a similar issue are also going on in the Supreme Court of India. If one wishes to have any medical aid in their bodybuilding, which is not necessary of course, one should consult a doctor or any eligible professional about it first.

Taking safer multivitamins isn't a big problem but, important to understand is that in a gym, nutrition from the diet is more important than supplements. One medicine may by chance work for one person but we never know what allergic reaction or harmful side effect one may face after taking such medication thus, precautions are very important. You visit the gym to gain health and fitness. You pay for that and not to get more sick by the side effects of drugs. Faster results through steroids and harmful supplements are not always the best way to build your body.
 Career:

This was a wide topic that was covered by Guru Mann in the event. To put it simply, one should do what one knows they are best at. The expectation of the help or guidance are the illusions that will stop you from achieving your goals. It isn't that you shouldn't seek any support but, if you don't find any, keep in mind that at the end of the day, you are enough to fulfill your goals if you have proper determinations, skills, and efforts.

Many times in life, there will be nearly no one supporting you for something unique you wish to do in your life. You must revert back to yourself for the support at that time. You must speak clearly with the second person inside your head, the one that motivates you, that is full of ideas and solutions. You must consult your own self when there is no support by anyone to be found. Take small actions, build a plan, be ready for failures but most importantly, never give up on your goals and efforts. Eventually, the dots will join and a path will be formed that will bring you closer to your goals.

Cherish those who support you but don't expect anyone to understand you because, the vision you have in your mind for yourself, it is not present inside the person 's mind from whom you expect the support. If that person would understand, they would try to support you if the person is able to, including your family otherwise not.

Second important thing that Guru Mann explained is that for those with such unique dreams of career that are not the more obvious careers in our society and may worry your family for your future, they should, first of all, choose the right degree as a back up in case your goals are not met.

Another thing is that if you are serious about your goal of career, you should peruse the similar degree. It is useless to waste your time and money on a degree that you won't even use in your career. You want to become a sports person or a dancer and you are doing engineering degree, what a waste of time and degree that would be even though you may become a dancer. If you rather take a degree related to your career of choice, dance, that would most likely secure your dream career in your future.

Your Family:

Guru Mann pointed out that the number of diseases is growing day by day, especially in our aged parents. Most of everyone's parents are on some kind of medication for years. If you simply google and see the side effect of those medications, you'll see that to fix one problem, your parents may be inviting even more health problems in the near future by having constant medicines. Not that they should not take medications, but they should also do something to improve their health and reduce the side effects such as taking care of their diet and nutrition, doing proper exercises, etc.

Mind set is also a big  problem. Some aged people are so addicted to medicines that they believe that even if they have a small headache, it will only go away by medicines. This habit is not healthy and may lead to problems. One should avoid medicines until it is really necessary and let your immune system take charge of protecting you. Such things are needed to be explained to people with such mindset.

If you know something good, you should try your best to share it with your parents at least, for their good.
Keep in mind that while educating and telling your parents about anything new, resistance may occur as they are getting old and have years of conditioning due to which they live the way they live their life.
It is common that in the beginning, they won't understand you, deny you or even try to refuse to accept or do something beneficial.

Take one step at a time, be patient and tolerant with them just like they were when they raised you as a child, when they helped, taught or explained to you how to stand, walk... or at least not to wet your bed at night.
Eventually, they'll start to understand, learn and accept things but it just takes a little effort and time sometimes.

We owe our parents at least this much, to add a little more health and happiness in their life...
