Art of Setting Goals For Success: Part 1

About:

In this post, I will be sharing about goals, types of goals and Categories of Goals.
Just in the second part of this post, I will further continue about how to set goals for different conditions/categories and aspects of your life that will lead you to your success along with what to do and what not to do, What possible obstacles you may face during your goal's achievement. I will also share some very important key aspects that are vital for any goal to be fulfilled. If you are one of those who finds it difficult to set goals, achieve them or sticking to your goals, then this post is for you!

Introduction:

We all know what goals are. Perhaps even you may have set some great goals to achieve something in your life. If I have to explain goals, I would say that goals are not simply a time based target, an ambition or an aim that we wish to reach/achieve. Goals are pretty much more than that in a deeper sense. When you listen to the term Setting a Goal, you may think like “it's no big deal, I have made and achieved many goals in my whole life.” But, goals are not always that simple for everyone. Goals are dynamic and abstract in nature that means for each goal, there can be many variables, conditions, and requirements that need specific actions and attention.  If you learn the proper art of goal setting, the only thing that might stop you from achieving your goals is a hell of bad luck on your side... just kidding.

One more Important thing I have to draw your attention towards is that setting a good goal is just the beginning. The real work begins after the setting of the goal. Both the setting of your goals and executing the goal is important and must be there hand in hand with each other. If you have a perfect goal, and you lack a good plan, efficiency and eligibility to act effectively on your set goal, chances are you are not gonna achieve long term goals easily and might fluctuate between various goal planning.

  • Goals are necessary to know what you wish to achieve in your life.
  • Goals need to be set relevantly otherwise a wrong goal might end you up in an unwanted position.
  • Setting right and realistic goal is as important as knowing how to achieve that goal and what efforts you need to put in order to get results.

Types of Goals:

There are most commonly 2 main types of Goals. Though you can divide even more but let's just stick to this pattern.

  • Long-Term Goals

  • Short-Term Goals.

What divides goals into these two types is the span of time in which they are achieved.

Long-Term Goals can be as long  dedication as of a few months or years or maybe a lifetime. For example, I want to make my company one of the leading brands or, I want to become a doctor or, I want to build a good physique in the gym, etc.

Short-Term Goals can be as short as a few days or weeks, maybe a few months. I have an exam after a week my goal is to finish this book in a week, although some of us might prefer to study a night before our exam, like me haha... or I want to take a 20 days no junk food challenge, or I want to finish all my work by tonight and go watch a movie with my family, or I want to walk 6000 steps today, etc...

There is no clear distinction between which is long-term and which is a short-term goal but it is important for you to understand and know what type of goal you are setting in relation to time.

Suppose you set a goal to become a rich within 6 months, I will say, It is a goal but, more likely a short-term goal which is probably not the best type of goal setting. It is important to understand how much time your goals may require from you and then, you must make your goals accordingly, with step by step planning and clarity.

I will not Include goals that take a day or less than a few days to accomplish, like daily goals, etc. No doubt they are goals too but I would prefer to call them more like a today's plan or routine/schedule. Unless of course, these everyday tasks you are working on are related to your short or long-term goals. Then, in that case, these day to day plans and routines would be more likely called as objectives or simply today's plan.

For example, today my goal is to walk 6000 walking steps.  If is it a one-day thing, that it should not be, then, I won't even bother to consider it as a goal but, if it is a long/short term goal like just for a rough example, “I want to build up a healthy lifestyle and start exercising. I will start from walking 4000 steps a few days, then 6000 steps further more days and then begin more exercises till my body become energetic and slim.” That is more like a goal of weight loss and regaining energy lost due to lethargy. The daily tasks you do to achieve that goal, let us say 4000, or 6000 walking steps should be considered as Stepping stones or daily objectives to reach your goal of loosing weight and reducing lethargy.

  • There are two main types of goals on the basis of time. Long-Term and Short-Term.
  • Objectives are all the efforts or things that you do all the way to achieve your goals.
  • Understanding what type of goal you are making on the basis of time, how much time it may take and giving it enough time to fruition is very important.

Categories of goals:

I'll Explain it pretty quick and short. This will help you to understand what goals you need to make according to your priority and will help you to build different plans for achieving different goals so that your goals may not clash and give you a burnout response. It doesn't happen with everyone but, there is a vast majority of people who happen to mix many of their goals and stay confused with how and on what to work first thus, attains nothing or very less than they actually could. There are vast categories of goals that we set in our life. Some of them are:

  • Self Development Goals: Personality, Attitude, Behavior development, Learning Skills, and new things, Hobbies, etc.

  • Spiritual Goals: Positive Thoughts and Mindset, Meditation, Compassion, Worship or prayers, etc.

  • Career and Achievement Goals: Getting a Job, Choosing a profession, Promotion, Career achievements, and position, Starting a business, etc.

  • Relationship Goals: Family goals, Marriage Goals, Improving relations and building communication, Socialization, etc.

  • Health Goals: Healthy Lifestyle, Fitness, Physique, and looks, Exercising, etc.

  • Academic Goals: Getting good scores, cracking Exams for higher posts like IAS, NEET, SSC, RAS, NET/JRF in India, etc. or Pursuing higher education, etc.

  • Financial planning/Earning Goals: Financial freedom, Become Rich, Investments, Debts clearing, Buying property, Charity, Liquid wealth and the second source of income, etc.

  • Lifestyle Goals: Luxury or simple lifestyle, become a vegan, a minimalist, or travel around the places and enjoy things that you've always wanted to experience and enjoy.
